Discrete Pulse of Light

The second work in a triptych on luminous phenomena (Discrete Stream of Light, 2022, Discrete Flow of Light, 2025-26), Discrete Pulse of Light (2024-25) underscores the desire to move towards the tangible, the natural manifestations we can perceive (light diffraction, interference). This tangibility raises questions about the unpredictability, inaccuracy and fragility of our threshold of perception, and thus our relationship with the world.

This perceptive sensitivity to light is also rooted in the artist’s own physical sensitivity, linked to his physical condition: as a young man, he could not look at the sun without fainting. The project thus bears witness to a unique and striking sensory relationship. The device, and consequently the entire performance, allows us to share a perception, a vision of the raw luminous material, as experienced by the artist in his youth. Pulse is therefore Côté’s most personal project to date and marks a turning point in his practice: an artistic proposition linked to an intimate life experience.

The project consists of a rail-mounted lighting system, incorporating a pair of light - whose specially designed lens breaks down the white - and 3D-printed reflective surfaces, moving along the Z axis. The luminosity and superimposition of the visual layers are entirely controlled by software, via a custom-designed device creating a process in constant motion, in synergy with the soundtrack. Sound, a cataclysm and vector of change, modulate the behavior of the motorized system, creating a synchronicity of mediums, to which the artist make modifications throughout the performance.

Deuxième œuvre d’un triptyque sur les phénomènes lumineux (Discrete Stream of Light, 2022, Discrete Flow of Light, 2025-26), Discrete Pulse of Light (2024-25) souligne le désir d’aller vers le tangible, vers des phénomènes naturels que nous pouvons percevoir (diffraction et interférences lumineuses). Cette tangibilité amène des questionnements quant à l’imprévisibilité, l’inexactitude, la fragilité de notre seuil de perception, et ainsi, notre rapport au monde.

Cette sensibilité perceptive à la lumière est par ailleurs ancrée chez l’artiste par une sensibilité physique bien personnelle, liée à une condition physique ; jeune, il ne pouvait regarder le soleil sans s’évanouir. Le projet témoigne donc d’un rapport sensoriel unique et marquant. Le dispositif, et par conséquent la performance, permet de partager une perception, une vision du matériau lumineux brut, tel qu’expérimenté par l’artiste dans sa jeunesse. Pulse est donc, pour Côté, le projet le plus personnel à ce jour, en plus de souligner un moment charnière dans sa pratique ; soit une proposition artistique liée à une expérience de vie intime.

Concrètement, le projet consiste en dispositif lumineux installé sur rail, englobant un couple lumière - dont la lentille, spécialement conçu, décompose le blanc - et surfaces réfléchissantes - mouvantes sur l'axe des Z - modélisés et imprimées en 3D. La luminosité et la superposition des couches visuelles sont entièrement contrôlées par logiciel, via un dispositif créé sur mesure, créant ainsi un processus en constant mouvement, en synergie avec la trame sonore. Le son, cataclysme et vecteur de changements, module le comportement du système motorisé, créant ainsi une synchronicité des médiums, auquel l’artiste effectue des modifications tout au long de la performance.
